Excuse me while I kiss the sky: District Brewing Company Launches "THE LEGEND OF MÜS KNUCKLE"

Tonight over 400 people gathered to celebrate District Brewing Company, Regina's first and only locally owned Brewery, launching its Mus Knuckle Premium Pale Lager tonight at the Orr Centre in Regina.

The band, Mirror Imij - the Jimi Hendrix Experience from Las Vegas flew in to celebrate this momentous occasion at the Orr Centre in the George Reed Auditorium.  Mirror Imij sang all the great songs, including my personal favourite, Watch Tower.

Congratulations to the District Brewing Company on your success.

History Reborn:
Regina Civic Museum
BY LYNN LARSON ARMSTRONG

Housed in Regina’s Warehouse District on 1375 Broad Street will be the Regina Civic Museum, featuring a curated collection of Regina’s history since our inception.

There are pieces of the original Albert Street Bridge, collections from the majestic 1500-seat Capitol Theatre built in 1921 that once stood on the corner of 12th and Scarth, a fur press, and thousands of other artifacts that tell our story.

“The largest piece in our collection is the steam locomotive now sitting at

Casino Regina. The smallest articles are stamps and pieces of jewelry. The collection tells us stories about whom we are and how we came to be where we are ,” says Shari Sokochoff, Executive Director.

“There are amazing pieces that celebrate the beauty of our city, as well as give memory to the dark days. The Museum is home to the large stained glass window, which is the largest surviving artifact of
the Knox Presbyterian Church that was damaged in the Regina Cyclone of 1912.”

The initiative to re-invent the museum began in March 2012, when the Board of Directors of the then Regina Plains Museum established a new strategic direction to become Regina’s civic museum, preserving and representing the history of our city. The new direction was approved by City Council, recognizing the Regina Civic Museum as a community partner and a core functional organization in the city.

“As the city grows and evolves, it will be important for those who shared in the creation of our city from its inception to revisit these artifacts and what they mean to them. For new comers to our city, the Regina Civic Museum will be the place to learn about the city they now call home.”

L-‐R: Jody Beaudry, Breanne Dmytriw, Deanna Perry, Shelly Korchinski, Sarah Kowalchuk, Gloria Korchinski, Lesia Matheson, Twila Parcher, Shannon Kaytor, Paulette Kaytorf

I went on an odyssey, in search of the places where the land meets the sky, where souls are renewed in the warmth of the summer sun, where people embody the spirit of past pioneers, and the entrepreneurs of the present and future. With Bon Jovi’s “Lost Highway” blasting, I hit the open road. I don’t have to go very far before I have to stop and take in the beauty of what I can see. Fifteen minutes from north Regina off Highway 11 is Lumsden.

Immediately I feel at home. I am drawn in by the inspiring sunrise, the warm summer air, the horizon of green trees that will soon turn a beautiful shade of red before the leaves are whisked away by the wind, and the hustle and bustle of the busy streets. It was there that I met the women of James Street, who embody the dream of living well in Saskatchewan. I am pleased to introduce you to them.

Wildflower Esthetics & Sugar Studio

Deanna Perry, Owner
Natural, clean and classy are the first words that come to mind as you enter Deanna Perry’s private spa nestled in a heritage building on James Street, Lumsden.

Through every treatment you experience at Wildflower, you will feel the peacefulness and serenity that Deanna holds dear to the Lumsden Valley where she grew up and still lives.

Eminence, a handmade organic skin care line from Hungary, is used in all services and retailed as well.
“It is like the clean eating of skincare,” Deanna explains. “Their moisturizers are full of vitamins and nutrients extracted from the fruits and vegetables that are used in their making. Aging doesn’t stand a chance against nature’s combinations like pear and poppy seed, strawberry rhubarb, gooseberry and black currant, cucumber mint, key lime and vanilla, which are infused in the Eminence serums, cleansers, masques and exfoliants.”

Body sugaring hair removal, another one of Deanna’s passions, is also done naturally, using only water, sugar and lemon juice.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness at Wildflower. In her desire to take her client’s well being to a higher level, all instruments and tools are cleaned using a statim, a sterilizing unit that dentists use to clean their instruments and tools. If it can’t be cleaned in the statim, it is disposed of.
Indulge in the finest facials, pedicures, manicures, and body treatments at Wildflower Esthetics & Sugar Studio or treat somebody with a gift certificate. Visit the website or call to book ahead before your next excursion to Lumsden, and prepare to bask in Eminence.

A Serendipitous Meeting of The Red Piano and the Fall Odyssey

It was day three of our fall photo shoot, now called the "Fall Odyssey", which included Lumsden, Saskatoon and Regina. We were downtown in search of a location for the Publisher's photo.

We  happened upon a beautiful, bright red, upright piano at the Regina Public Library.

It was love at first sound, when I heard a man playing classical music on a bright red, upright piano  He was dressed in tall white socks and shoes, shorts, a tennis shirt and a hat. I was drawn in to his melody. I asked him why a bright red piano was sitting outside of RPL.

He explained that it is part of an exhibit at the Dunlop Art Gallery called "Play", by Kathleen Irwin, and Jeff Mortin,  "a multi-part installation centralized around two shiny upright pianos that encourage interaction, improvisation, performance and literal play, blurring the boundaries between spectator and performer."  The exhibit ran from June 14 to August 25, 2013.

The first piano was situated outside so that anyone could come and play.  The second was positioned inside the gallery in a black room, "replicating the conventions of a concert hall or theatre."

"The Piano stands in the centre, on a circular red carpet, lit by a sparkling chandelier. It too may be played, but approaching it is tantamount to taking the stage."

Outfitted with a webcam, a microphone and speakers, the system operates on a delayed playback system, so that when the pianist plays, the sound is played back in a delayed format.  Projections of previous pianists who played before offer "the possibility of temporarily unbounded collaboration with others to ensue."

It was a serendipitous moment. We were creating the Red Issue. I was wearing red, and this was a perfect, shiny red piano.  It was a perfect match.  The piano called out to me: "Photograph me."

I would like to thank the Regina Public Library and Dunlop Art Gallery for allowing SKY to be a part of this shared symphony.  It is truly a keepsake and one of the most memorable moments in the creation of SKY Magazine thus far.

Here are some pictures provided by the Dunlop Art Gallery to help experience and the exhibit, even though it has since come down.
